15 Best Metroidvanias On PS5 Out Now

Metroidvanias are a famous type of game that has been getting a lot of attention in the past few years. Here are a few of the best PS5 games you can play.

Metroidvania games have reached a new golden age. It’s taken a while, but Nintendo, small developers, and even Konami have all been putting out great games and re-releasing some of the best games of all time.

In the past, Sony hasn’t had the best image for hosting games in the genre. It all started with Nintendo’s devices and mostly stayed there for a long time. But now it’s a new day, and the PS5 is full of games that fans of the type will enjoy.

Supraland

When you first look at Supraland, it’s hard to tell what kind of game it is. You play as simple red figures that look like toys and go into a real-life child’s sandbox full of puzzles, battles, and deep exploring.

The game has a lot of Metroidvania influences, which are clear from its bright colours and the fact that you can’t get through blocked-off places until you get upgrades. You’ll also want to look around as much as you can when you first start out, because the open sandbox is surprisingly full of secrets, prizes, and NPCs who can help you along the way.

Blasphemous

Blasphemous was inspired by both Soulslikes and Metroidvanias. It combines the brutal and demanding bloodthirsty fighting of the Souls series with the deep upgrade system and fun backtracking gameplay of Metroid games.

It has beautiful 2D pixel art graphics that are Gothic-inspired and give you a lot of eye candy for all the bloody and brutal killings you’ll be doing as you explore this beautiful nightmare world. The game’s combat, exploration, upgrade system, and platforming all come together to make a very enjoyable and rewarding experience, even if you’re new to the genre.

FIST: Forged In Shadow Torch

Don’t be fooled by how cute the animated bunny rabbit in FIST: Forged In Shadow looks. Torch is serious and packs a powerful punch. In the game, this cute army rabbit wears mech armour with deadly fists so he can explore the dangerous and very detailed 2.5D map of Torch City.

There are many beautiful places in the city that show how dirty and dangerous it can be. Each area is full to the brim of beautiful details and secrets to find. Combat is fluid and quick, and there are more chances to get more tools and improve your ability to kill later on. As you play and level up, you’ll unlock a lot of new platforming and moving skills that will give you even more room to play.

Dead Cells

Dead Cells is one of the best 2D sidescrollers ever made, but even that isn’t enough to describe it. It does a great job of combining several well-known and popular genres.

It has fast-paced fighting based on skills, a deep upgrade system that lets you build your character in a lot of different ways, and beautiful pixel art levels that you can explore in a Metroidvania-style way. It combines the best parts of Soulslikes, roguelikes, and 2D platformers to make a ridiculously engaging gameplay loop that will have you doing run after gloriously procedurally generated run until the early hours. Where do you get off, Dead Cells?

Control: Ultimate Edition

After Jesse Faden gets what might be the worst job raise in the world, it’s up to her to figure out what’s going on with all the interdimensional nonsense that’s turning people into floating zombies that kill people. She has to go through every floor of the Oldest House to get back in charge and find her brother.

Control is a Metroidvania game, so it works well that it takes place in a single location. You’ll be exploring every corner of this strange building’s walls as they change shape. As you play, you’ll get a bunch of cool upgrades that let you get to places you couldn’t before, and you’ll have the chance to improve your service weapon so it can hit the “Hiss” harder. By the end of the game, you feel like a superhero on steroids as you leave a line of paranormal destruction in your wake.

Ender Lilies: Quietus Of The Nights

Metroidvanias and games like Souls go together like peanut butter and chocolate, peanut butter and jelly, or even just peanut butter. Many games, like Dead Cells and Hollow Knight, have combined the two, but Ender Lilies can move as well as any of them, even if its controls can be a little off at times.

This is a top-notch game that pays you for exploring and draws you in with a gripping story that gets more interesting as you play. It’s also beautiful to look at and listen to, thanks to the art style and music.

Axiom Verge 2

Indie developers have a knack for making some of the best Metroidvania games and then making a sequel that defies all expectations and is better in new and interesting ways than the first game. One of these is called Axiom Verge 2.

Axiom Verge 2 is at its best when you’re exploring. Running around, hopping through tears to get into The Breach, and finding new paths and secret goodies is a very rewarding and satisfying thing to do over and over again. Also, the game is beautiful and fun to play. The only thing that holds it back is that the fighting and boss fights aren’t very good.

The Messenger

The Messenger is a strange bird. At first look, the game seems to have nothing to do with its genre. It’s a stage-based game with no backtracking, and it has a lot in common with Ninja Gaiden, Mega Man, and even Castlevania (before they added a little Metroid).

Don’t fall for the game’s first trick. Like a sneaky ninja, The Messenger doesn’t show its true Metroid-like self until a few hours into the game. It’s also one of the best because it uses a unique time-hopping feature and combines it with smooth controls and fun gameplay.

Steamworld Dig 2

Back in 2013, Steamworld Dig was one of the best independent games to come out. Its sequel, on the other hand, takes that rumbling scale and turns it all the way up to 11. Steamworld Dig doesn’t use the procedurally generated worlds of its predecessor. Instead, it has a hand-made world full of exploring, combat, crafting, and other RPG goodness.

This change of direction does have some downsides, like the fact that it’s mostly a “one and done” deal. Thankfully, Steamworld Dig 2 is a hell of a good time that you should have. It also has a pretty cool post-game that is locked behind a collect-a-thon that can be hard. Let’s just say that this is one of those Metroidvania games where you really need to find all the secret things.

Guacamelee! 2

Drinkbox hit it big with the great Guacamelee, and the Super Turbo Championship Edition made it even better. With the sequel, it made sense to go back to the wonderfully weird Luchadorian world. The only real risk? Doing the same thing over and over again and making a product that is a bit too similar.

Guacamelee 2 dances around this problem like a magnificent luchador and instead makes what could be the best game in the series. Drive Mad is a game you don’t want to miss. It brings back its great navigation and combat combo system, humour, and well-implemented references, and adds a few new features and things to do.

Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order

Metroidvania is not an easy game to describe. It’s a very complicated mix of different styles that come together to make something completely new. Jedi: Fallen Order is a Metroidvania game because it does almost everything a Metroidvania game should do.

This is not like most Metroidvanias because it is fully 3D. It is similar to games like Dark Souls, especially in how you fight.Among these people are bosses in particular. Metroid, on the other hand, is all about exploring, and going back with new Force Powers and abilities is always promoted. You can even change the order of things, which is always nice. Not just a (inter)stellar Star Wars game, but also a great clone of Souls and a great Metroidvania.

Carrion

Carrion is unlike any other game. Every game on this list is in the same type, but this one is about getting away, not going places. Killing the “hero” instead of the bad guy. You play as a gloriously unnatural monster that has fled captivity and must use its sticky body and abilities to rip, tear, rend, and grow.

Carrion is often called a “reverse horror game” because you are the thing that goes bump in the… lab? It gives you a strong sense of control right away. As you play, your skills only get stronger, and when you finally break free, the game ends on a very scary note. It has a short run time, but the pace is great, which makes up for it. It’s easy to finish in one sitting, but you’ll remember it for a long time.

Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a game that means a lot to people who grew up in the 1990s. Even though it’s hard to believe now, Konami used to make and sell some of the best games of their time. One of those games was Castlevania. Koji Igarashi, who is often called the “Father of Castlevania,” went off on his own and crowdfunded Bloodstained as a way to stick to the man and bring back a game that had died.

It worked perfectly, and Bloodstained feels like a real addition to the Castlevania series, with a few extras thrown in for good measure. Bloodstained stands out because it has hundreds of guns, a lot of unlockable and upgradeable souls, and the voice of Solid Snake himself, David Hayter.

Castlevania Requiem

Castlevania Requiem is on this list because it has Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which is one of the best games ever made. You play as Alucard, the evil Dracula’s son, and you’re on a quest to stop him from doing bad things and satisfy your own dark wants. This is the first Castlevania game to use the Metroid style, and it did it so well that it made “Vania” a part of the name of the genre.

Symphony of the Night holds up against almost every modern Metroidvania. It does this with an art style that will never go out of style and a music that is better than almost everything. When you add different endings, a lot of secrets, the ability to play it more than once, and one of the best post-game reveals ever, you have a winner. Not only is this Symphony of the Night, but Requiem also comes with Rondo of Blood, which is often thought to be the best Classicvania game and is Symphony’s predecessor.

Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight is one of the best games of all time, but only if you work hard at it. It starts out hard and gets harder and harder until it’s a real struggle. The game is very fair because the controls are tight and the difficulty goes up slowly.

It’s also one of the most open Metroidvania games out there, with a nearly infinite number of possible paths, some of which take you down some really bad tunnels. Exploring is really the name of the game here, and if you accept the challenge, you’ll find a dark story with memorable characters and events.
