Path of Exile
When compared to Diablo III, Path of Exile is the antithesis of that game in every way. It’s like reliving those glorious Diablo II days all over again, and it feels like the natural progression of the series. Path of Exile is visually and mechanically very similar to Diablo II, but its visual quality is clearly superior.
The action takes place in a massive open world where you are free to roam and loot at your leisure. Explore the world, eliminating enemies and gathering unique items. Find and defeat evil monsters in vast underground caverns and dungeons for the chance to loot their incredible riches. The game supports cooperative play, but the real fun begins when each player is given their very own massive map to explore and progress through independently.
Titanfall 2
Although Titanfall 2 by Electronic Arts didn’t come out until 2016, it’s still a fantastic option for those who prefer to play PC games online. Titanfall 2 puts players in command of massive robots (called Titans) with incredible abilities like wall running. Titanfall 2 has a great single-player campaign with a story mode that I highly recommend, but the multiplayer mode is probably even more exciting.
Titanfall 2 supports many different multiplayer game modes. These include Amped Hardpoint, Bounty Hunt, Pilot vs. Pilot, Capture the Flag, and many more. In Titanfall 2’s multiplayer mode, players begin as individual soldiers on a battlefield, where they must use their individual abilities and the weapons at their disposal to eliminate as many enemies as possible.
This fills the Titan meter and allows players to call in Titans (the giant robots we mentioned earlier), which means that there is almost always a point in every Titanfall 2 multiplayer match where massive Titans fall down from the sky and wreak havoc on the battlefield. If you like first-person shooters, you should check out Titanfall 2.
EVE Online
There is no better game than EVE Online for fans of space combat. The massively multiplayer online space battle game is packed with exciting battles. Although this game came out back in 2003, it still deserves to be mentioned here. EVE Online features both betrayal in space and massive battles, and the best part is that it is completely free to play. The once-required subscription service is no longer available, allowing any player to access the game’s full content for no cost at all upon initial download.
However, there will come a time when you need to take up the optional subscription to get access to all the skills, but even without it, you’ll find that EVE Online offers quite a bit of gameplay and become engrossed in it. Playing is free of charge, so there’s no real risk involved; if you enjoy it, a monthly subscription begins at just $10.95.
Rainbow Six Siege
At first glance, the online PC game Rainbow Six Siege may remind you of the classic Counter-Strike. On the other hand, unlike most online shooters you may be familiar with, this one heavily emphasizes strategy and teamwork. Playing with a group of friends can be a lot of fun because you’ll have to familiarize yourself with the maps and coordinate your attacks to defeat the enemies.
To those who are still skeptical about the game’s viability as an online first-person shooter, consider the following: In the world of eSports, Rainbow Six Siege is one of the most popular games, with millions of players and a dedicated fan base. Even more content has been added to the game since its 2016 release thanks to a number of post-release updates, the most recent of which was the downloadable content expansion “Operation Grim Sky,” released in September of 2018.
World of Tanks
Are tank battles something you enjoy? World of Tanks is the best free online PC game for you if that’s the case. The armored vehicles in World of Tanks range from light APCs to massive battle tanks and self-propelled artillery of the 20th century.
The game is free to play, but there are freemium elements that make it easier to access premium content. However, if you’re content with just using the basic functionality, you don’t have to pay anything extra. As well as being a popular eSport, World of Tanks has been honored with multiple Golden Joystick awards over the years.
Hearthstone
When it comes to digital card games, Hearthstone is king. The online version of these games brings all the fun of trading cards face to face with other players in a 1 vs. 1 match. In this exciting turn-based strategy game, you must use your creativity to build decks and defeat your opponents. While playing Hearthstone doesn’t cost anything, some of the game’s extras do. Card packs in Hearthstone are similar to the random decks of physical card games.
If you want to become a Legend, you need to amass a large number of rare cards and play with multiple powerful decks. You can play Hearthstone in a few minutes, and yet you can’t stop playing it. The game’s random nature and stunning visuals make for a ton of fun, and you never know what to expect from one playthrough to the next. If you’ve ever wanted to play a card game online, your search ends with Hearthstone.
Minecraft
When it comes to survival games, the vast majority of players are familiar with Minecraft and its blocky, retro visual style. Yet, the game’s core mechanics are sound, and I found myself unable to stop playing. You can create items, mine for resources, construct objects, and discover new areas all within the same game. Minecraft’s open world is huge and full of places to go. You’ll need to go out and gather materials or make what you need. Before nightfall, when the monsters come out to hunt, you must construct a safe haven for yourself.
One’s ability to think outside the box is crucial to success. You’re free to construct whatever your heart desires. Create a fortress, a mansion, or a populous kingdom. In Minecraft, the only limit is your own imagination. This is the perfect game for you if you enjoy constructing items and adventuring across large worlds.
League of Legends
DoTA 2 faces stiff competition from League of Legends, another top multiplayer online battle arena. It’s an easier MOBA to pick up and play than DoTA 2. League of Legends is another popular game with a sizable esports community behind it, making it a fascinating option.
The game’s gameplay is slightly different from that of DoTA 2 due to the addition of a number of new and innovative features to the MOBA genre. League of Legends is the best multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game for those who prefer something simpler and faster paced. After finishing the tutorial, it’s pretty easy to pick up and use.
Starcraft II
Starcraft II is the gold standard of online strategy games because it truly puts your brain and strategy skills to the test. The goal of the game is to defeat the enemy by carefully amassing resources, constructing strongholds, and launching strategic attacks. Starcraft II has an excellent story mode in which you witness the final confrontation between the three primary races of the game’s universe. Humans, aliens (Terrans, Protoss, and zergs), and other races.
Each race has a campaign that you can play to learn more about what they’re capable of. The multiplayer mode is the best because it allows you to compete head-to-head against players from all ranks. The goal of the game is to foil your opponents’ plans and wipe out their base. Starcraft II is an enjoyable strategy game with a healthy dose of healthy competition. And if you’re still hungry for more strategy games after playing Starcraft, here’s a list of games that are similar to Starcraft and that you’ll enjoy just as much.
Team Fortress 2
Overwatch would not exist if not for Team Fortress 2. Even though Blizzard likely won’t admit it publicly, everyone knows that Team Fortress 2’s antics were a major influence on Overwatch. A fast-paced, over-the-top shooter, Team Fortress 2 features flashy characters and amazing gameplay.
Class-based systems in shooters were first introduced in this game and have since become standard in the genre. The gameplay in this arena shooter is fast-paced and places a premium on good teamwork. This is the best game for you if you want to be blown away by a truly incredible experience.
Warframe
Warframe is one of those games that, despite its age, has consistently received updates and new content to keep the game fresh and exciting for both newcomers and veteran players, so it’s another great option if you’re looking for an online PC game. Warframe puts you in charge of a clan that awakens from cryogenic stasis to find itself at war with rival interstellar factions.
This game is free to play, but it does feature microtransactions for additional content. Those items, however, can also be obtained through regular game play and grinding. There have been multiple updates to the game, the most recent of which was released in November of this year. Warframe is now also playable on the go on the Nintendo Switch for those who own that system.
The genres of survival games, crafting games, mining games, and platforming games are all represented in Terraria. It’s a lot like Minecraft but in 2D and pacman 30th anniversary with more interaction between players. The game features retro visuals and allows players to mine, craft, construct, and fight their way through levels in search of treasure and loot. It’s a new take on the role-playing game genre that combines the best of Minecraft with classic RPG elements. For the chance to acquire rare items, you must venture into dangerous caverns.
The action and adventure elements of the game are merely a bonus to the main focus on construction and creation. In Terraria, you’ll find everything you love about platformers, role-playing games, and survival games all rolled into one.
Terraria
When it comes to fighting games, Tekken is in the top tier. Although it wasn’t the first of its kind, this game helped propel the 3D fighting game genre into the mainstream. The latest installment, Tekken 7, is the best looking and playing of the series so far. In Tekken 7, a plethora of fantastic new playable characters have been introduced.
The roster has a wide variety of playable characters, so you can pick one that best fits your playstyle. In Tekken 7, you can test your skills against great players from all over the world in the multiplayer mode, while also enjoying a great story mode where you can learn the histories of all the characters and how it all began. Tekken 7 is a must-play if you enjoy competitive fighting games that push your skills to the limit.
Tekken 7
Anyone who hasn’t tried Grand Theft Auto is probably not gaming. I think most of us can put ourselves in Tommy Vercetti’s shoes and say that we’ve frequented Vice City and hung out on Grove Street with CJ and the gang just like Tommy did. Well, with GTA V we are back in San Andreas, and what better way to fully embrace the chaos that is GTA than to play it online with a ton of other people doing everything in the game.
GTA Online
Even if you have no interest in advancing the story or completing any meaningful tasks, GTA Online still offers a ton of entertainment. Anyone with an internet connection can now join GTA Online and pretty much do whatever they want. The game has been used for everything from hosting readings of Shakespeare to hosting political debates. Try it out, because it’s one of the best online open world games for PC right now, and it’s a lot of fun to play.
Red Dead Online
An additional Rockstar game closes out the lineup. If you’re a fan of GTA Online’s over-the-top shenanigans but also have a soft spot for cowboys and westerns, then Red Dead Online is the game for you. If you’ve ever wanted to live out your dreams of settling a new frontier town, this is your chance to do so in relative safety, all while pursuing your dreams of becoming wealthy. You could make an effort to improve your life, or you could simply relax and get by.
If you liked Red Dead Redemption 2, you will probably also like the online component. Best of all, you can play while belting out “Wanted Dead or Alive” by Bon Jovi.
